India Entrance Examination Landscape 2026

India's higher education system features over 100 major entrance examinations across engineering, medical, management, law, design, defence, and research streams. The 2026 academic cycle brings significant changes including NTA's expanded role, new GATE papers, and CUET's growing acceptance.

Engineering & Architecture (20 Exams)

The engineering entrance space is dominated by JEE Main (national, 10+ lakh candidates) and JEE Advanced (IIT-only, top 2.5 lakh). State-level exams like MHT CET, KCET, WBJEE, and AP EAPCET serve regional engineering colleges. Private university exams include BITSAT, VITEEE, and SRMJEEE.

Law (15 Exams)

CLAT (24 NLUs), AILET (NLU Delhi), LSAT India (Jindal, others), SLAT (Symbiosis). AIBE for practice certification. State-level: MH CET Law, TS LAWCET, AP LAWCET.

Design & Fashion (10 Exams)

UCEED (IIT B.Des), NID DAT, CEED (PG), NIFT (NTA). Testing creative ability, design aptitude, and visual communication skills.

Research & Fellowships (15 Exams)

UGC NET, CSIR NET (JRF/Lectureship), IIT JAM (M.Sc at IITs), IISER IAT, GATE (also for research). International: SAT, GRE, GMAT.

Defence (3 Exams)

NDA (after 12th), CDS (after graduation), AFCAT (Air Force). All require SSB interview post written exam.
