Science Research Entrances 2026: IIT JAM & CSIR NET
For B.Sc graduates aspiring to M.Sc at IITs/IISc or research fellowships, IIT JAM and CSIR NET are the primary gateways. Both require deep subject knowledge but serve different purposes.
IIT JAM 2026
Purpose: M.Sc, Joint M.Sc-PhD, and other PG programs at IITs, IISc, NITs.
Papers: 7 subjects—Biotechnology, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, Physics.
Pattern: 60 questions (MCQ + MSQ + NAT), 100 marks, 3 hours. Negative marking for MCQs only.
Preparation Strategy
Cover B.Sc syllabus thoroughly using standard textbooks. Focus on problem-solving over rote learning. Previous year papers (10 years) are gold—solve them twice. Mock tests from Month 4 onwards.
CSIR NET 2026 (Science)
Purpose: JRF (₹31,000/month fellowship) and Lectureship eligibility in 5 sciences.
Subjects: Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Earth Sciences.
Pattern: 3 parts (A: General, B: Subject MCQ, C: Advanced subject). Duration: 3 hours.
Preparation Strategy
Part A is common—practice reasoning and science aptitude. Part B covers breadth—study all units. Part C is depth—choose your strongest topics (only attempt 20 out of available). Previous years essential.
