UGC NET 2026: Clear JRF in First Attempt

UGC NET 2026, conducted by NTA, determines eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor positions. With 83 subjects and separate Paper 1 + Paper 2, a structured approach to both papers is essential.

Paper 1: Teaching & Research Aptitude (50 questions)

Topics: Teaching Aptitude, Research Aptitude, Reading Comprehension, Communication, Mathematical Reasoning & Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation, ICT, People & Environment, Higher Education System.

Strategy: This is common for all subjects. Focus on scoring 35+ out of 50. Practice previous year Paper 1 questions—patterns repeat. ICT and Higher Education are most scoring.

Paper 2: Subject-Specific (100 questions)

Highly subject-dependent. Study the NTA NET syllabus for your subject carefully. Use subject-specific UGC NET books. Practice previous 10 years papers—many questions repeat concepts.

JRF vs NET-Only

JRF: Top merit (higher cutoff). Provides ₹31,000/month fellowship for PhD. Age limit: 30 years (relaxation for reserved).

NET (Assistant Professor): Lower cutoff. No age limit. Lifetime eligibility for AP positions.

Preparation Plan

Month 1-2: Complete Paper 2 syllabus from standard books. Make short notes.

Month 3: Paper 1 preparation + Paper 2 revision.

Month 4: Previous years papers. Mock tests. Time management practice.

Key Tips

  • Paper 1 is common—prepare once, score in every attempt
  • No negative marking—attempt all questions
  • 3 hours total for both papers (Paper 1: 1 hour, Paper 2: 2 hours)
  • Focus on accuracy in Paper 2—this determines your rank
